The Rules
- Sip — Maximus rubs Andalusian soil between his fingers before a battle
- Sip — Commodus acts petulant, manipulative, or inappropriately affectionate toward Lucilla
- Sip — The crowd chants 'Maximus!' or roars approval after a kill in the arena
- Sip — Proximo gives Maximus philosophical or tactical advice about surviving the arena
- Sip — Maximus's wife and son appear in a golden-hued dream or vision sequence
- Drink Twice — Commodus descends to the arena floor to confront Maximus face-to-face
- Drink Twice — Senator Gracchus speaks in favor of the Senate against Commodus in the chambers
- Drink Twice — Juba buries figurines in the dirt beside Maximus after a fight
- Shot — Maximus reveals his true identity — 'My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius' — in full armor
- Shot — Commodus stabs Maximus through the armor before the final duel to weaken him secretly
- Chug — Maximus kills Commodus in the arena, collapses, and sees his family waiting beyond the gate in golden fields
Themed Cocktail
Elysian Fields
Ingredients:
- 1.5 oz cognac
- 0.75 oz blood orange juice
- 0.5 oz honey syrup
- 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
- 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 0.25 oz aged balsamic reduction
Instructions:
- 1Combine cognac, blood orange juice, honey syrup, lemon juice, and bitters in a shaker with ice.
- 2Shake vigorously for 15 seconds and double-strain into a chilled rocks glass over a large ice cube.
- 3Drizzle the balsamic reduction in a slow spiral over the surface without stirring.
- 4Garnish with a blood orange half-wheel and a fresh thyme sprig pressed against the ice.
